Donations raised through CMN Hospitals help fund the free Student Heart Checks and transportable EKG machines that made an enormous difference for Darius and his family. The screenings check adolescents for a preventable cause of death among young athletes, a completely non-symptomatic condition that can lead to sudden cardiac arrest during physical activity.

At the time of his screening, Darius was conditioning for football, training for baseball and had just finished basketball season, so he and his family were shocked to find that he had the most serious heart condition detected by the screening, hypertopic cardiomyopathy. The sports he’d spent years pursuing were life threatening in a way he would never have imagined. Darius’s doctors say the Student Heart Check screening saved his life.
